Man is it hot...
I got back Yesterday from Austin, Texas. It's a great city (it was the third time I've been there). I got to see some nice things around town...
I learned from my friend KT that Austin is the only city that still operates Moonlight Towers:

Here's the Capitol (but it's wrapped in scaffolding now):

Here's the Governor's Mansion (but it's undergoing renovations due to a fire):

Cry me a river
Roy Ashburn spoke to On Top Magazine and the gay magazine asked him about Ken Mehlman's recent coming out. Taking Ashburn's anti-gay history, subsequent coming out and reformed gay rights stance into consideration, his life in many ways mirrors Mehlman's so his response shouldn't come as much of a surprise.Roy, you were a really bad person...but you have NOTHING on Ken Mehlman, not even close. Once Ken gives his ill-gotten $3.77 million condo to gay rights I'll believe he is sorry.
The plot line is getting boring:
1. Trash the gays, use them to get elected, run the most anti-gay campaign in history.I hope book buyers do to Ken what they did to Mary Cheney. The gays won't give him the money and the right wing hates her, too.
2. Use your power in office to hurt us more.
3. Fuck up, lose your job (2006 RNC)
4. Buy the multi-million condo with your ill gotten gains (In the middle of Chelsea no less)
5. Come out
6. Write a book
7. Do a speaking tour

"American miracle": Beck's outrageous predictions for his "historic" 8-28 rally | Media Matters for America
I am willing to bet that Beck's miracle will be a healing of his macular dystrophy.
Media Matters: Beck's outrageous predictions for his "historic" 8-28 rally:
Beck: 'I expect a miracle on 8-28.' On the July 22 edition of his radio show, Beck stated, 'I expect a miracle on 8-28.' Beck also used a Biblical allusion to encourage his listeners to use the '40 days and 40 nights' before his rally to 'change your life' and 'start all over again.' Beck then asked his listeners to 'witness' the 'miracle' with him on 8-28.

They tried
Ambinder needed a little push on a Wednesday... As we know, he planned to run the story Friday afternoon, to most likely diminish the media frenzy and to allow apologists like Dustin Lance Black and Chad Griffin time to support Ken publicly. Pathetic Hollywood people who care abut nothing more than money and access to it. And why will it take millions? Because Olson didn't make enough off of Bush v. Gore? If they are all so concerned about our rights, let Mehlman take the condo and use THAT to fund the battle. (I am disgusted that Griffin was involved in Outrage as one of the people who raised funds for the project.)
And then there's the Dickens aspect. Like Ebenezer Scrooge, Mr. Mehlman needs to personally receive visits from his ghosts of homophobia past. Ken needs to look in the eyes of the families who lost their children to the rampant homophobia promoted under his tenure at the RNC, whether by hate crime or suicide and he needs to look into the eyes and hear the devastating stories of people who were unable to be by the bedside of their partners when they lay dying, alone, away from the ones they loved.Ken Mehlman is not doing what is right, he is doing what benefits Ken Mehlman.
I'll be talking about it tonight on the Ed Show on MSNBC, 6pm ET, on Ed's radio show at 12:30.
And a special thanks to Wonkette for the shoutout:
For his part, Mike Rogers wants to see Ken Mehlman do a LOT of apologizing and public self-flagellation before he will even think about allowing him to be a Socially Accepted Gay:
So, how can Ken Mehlman redeem himself? I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for being the architect of the 2004 Bush reelection campaign. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for his role in developing strategy that resulted in George W. Bush threatening to veto ENDA or any bill containing hate crimes laws. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for the pressing of two Federal Marriage Amendments as political tools. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for developing the 72-hour strategy, using homophobic churches to become political arms of the GOP before Election Day.
And those state marriage amendments. I want to hear him apologize for every one of those, too.
Also, he should probably be punched on live television by Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, and maybe one of the man-fags from the So You Think You Can Lip Sync While Wearing Wigs or the So You Think You Can Make Pretty Dresses, For Girls, or whatever the hell shows the gays watch obsessively, in groups, while squealing, especially since Mehlman is still giving money to anti-gay candidates! As Joe Jervis said, “hookers call that ‘working both sides of the street.’

Ken Mehlman is coming out
If I had to say what one thing really moved me to create this site it would be the 2004 reelection campaign of George W. Bush, the most homophobic national campaign in history. That campaign was run by one of the nation's worst closeted individuals, Ken Mehlman.
If I first started writing about Mehlman in 2004, why is Ken getting his Roy Cohn Award now? Because I am able to report – here for the first time -- that Ken Mehlman, the former Chairman of the Republican National Committee is set to come out of the closet in a column by Atlantic writer Marc Ambinder Friday morning or early next week. This will be on the heels of his being included in a fundraising letter supporting marriage equality.

It's always nice to know that my reporting is validated as correct, even if the media has been hiding it for six years. Following a report about Mehlman, Bill Maher spoke about it on Larry King's show… until Larry's staff edited it out, that is. Here's a two-minute clip from Outrage about exactly that. You'll see how CNN protected Mehlman by editing out what Bill Maher had to say:
The three people most responsible for the anti-gay actions of the Bush reelection campaign are Mehlman, Karl Rove and Bush. In addition to his role at the RNC, Mehlman served in the first Bush Administration as White House Political Director. In 2004 he was the general chairman of the Bush reelection campaign.
In 2004 Steve Schmidt (then the Republican National Convention spokesman and later the McCain campaign's senior strategist) lied to me when I asked him point blank about Mehlman. "Ken Mehlman is not gay," he proclaimed.
In 2006, Mehlman told the New York Daily News, "I am not gay, but those stories did a number on my dating life for six months."
It's so nice to be proven right, me that is, not Ken.
If this move doesn't call for a Roy Cohn Award, I don't know what does. Ken Mehlman is horridly homophobic and no matter how orchestrated his coming out is, our community should hold him accountable for his past.
As we saw with Jim McGreevy, many gay leaders will attempt to elbow themselves to the front of the line to say on cable TV how wonderful it is that Ken is now being honest with the American people. Someone will be quoted in the New York Times saying something like, "After so many years of working for the Republicans, it's wonderful to see Ken be true to himself." Or perhaps you'll read a quote in the Washington Post about how "every gay person is on their own personal journey and we are happy Ken has decided to be so open about his personal struggle." Next up will come the book, then the TV shows, and of course the speaking tour.
I'll only buy it if he is really sorry.
And then there is one other little thing. You see, while you and I had the horrible feelings of being treated so poorly by our President, while teens were receiving the messaging 'gay is bad' giving them 'permission' to gay bash, while our rights were being stripped away state by state, Ken was out there laughing all the way to the bank. So, if Ken is really sorry, and he very well may be, then all he needs to do is sell his condo and donate the funds to the causes he worked against so hard for all those years. He's done a lot of damage to a lot of organizations, while making a lot of money. A LOT of money. It's time to put his money where his mouth is. Ken Mehlman is sitting in a $3,770,000.00 (that's $3.77 million) condo in Chelsea while we have lost our right to marry in almost 40 states.
THEN, and only then, should Mehlman be welcomed into our community.
In 2006, I went to a fundraiser attended by Ken Mehlman to ask him about his conflicting answers about being gay. Of course he denied it and also neglected to be forthright about a friend who accompanied him to virtually every Bush Inaugural event. This man has been living a lie at our expense. Let's not let him get on the gravy train of gay love.
And remember the heinous ads interjecting race into a US House Race in Tennessee, I guess my reply ad was more correct than people cared to admit back then.
A message left at Mehlman's office has not been answered.
I had a brief email exchange with Ambinder and have not yet heard back if he has a comment.

Back in DC

The Maryland shore is really lovely this time of year. Time out of DC really recharges me.
On a completely unrelated note, a reader sent this to me and I thought it was one of the funnier email things I've received lately:

Larry Craig will be taking your calls...

This could be fun. You can listen live at the radio's website and call in and talk to Larry Craig! Larry will be appearing later tonight on Boise station KBOI-670.
Idaho Statesman: Larry Craig to spend 3 hours co-hosting on KBOI Monday, taking calls:
Former Idaho GOP Sen. Larry Craig will be on KBOI-670 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (That's 7-10pm ET) Monday , filling in for conservative host Nate Shelman.
Shelman, who will be vacationing, said Craig will field phone calls and focus on politics, elections and the economy.
Shelman said he doesn’t expect Craig to take questions about his 2007 conviction for misdemeanor disorderly conduct in connection with a sex sting in a men’s room at the Minneapolis airport.
“It’s an understood agreement,” Shelman said. “I don’t think he wants to relive it.”
Craig has phoned in to speak with Shelman since retiring in 2009, but Monday's three hours in the Boise studio will be his first extended appearance.

Remember that threat to punch me in the face?
Apparently Doug McKelway has a temperament problem that extends beyond threatening to punch me in the face and calling a sportsman a "pansy." It's one thing to go homophobic, it's another thing to piss off the boss.Washington Post: WJLA-TV's Doug McKelway suspended after clash with station manager, sources say:
The episode led to a meeting between McKelway and Bill Lord, WJLA's station manager and news director, that featured sharp exchanges between them, said several newsroom sources who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak about a personnel issue. The article doesn't fail to mention my interaction with McKelway:
"The issue wasn't what he said in the live shot. It was what he said when he was questioned about it by Bill," said one of McKelway's colleagues. "The issue is insubordination."
Last year, McKelway threatened to punch a local blogger during an interview that McKelway was conducting on NewsChannel 8, the cable station owned by WJLA's parent company, Allbritton Communications of Rosslyn. The blogger, Michael Rogers, described his efforts to "out" politicians who opposed gay rights but were allegedly living gay lives in secret. McKelway took exception to Rogers's tactics, in part because Rogers had targeted several Republican congressmen. In case you missed the original on-air exchange with McKelway and me, here's the video. Even his co-host was shocked. The moment is at about 2:55
The conversation grew increasingly heated, as McKelway repeatedly interrupted Rogers. At one point, McKelway told his guest: "I'd take you outside and give you a punch across the face. . . . I think you're hurting innocent people."
A day later, McKelway was unrepentant on the air, telling viewers, "An apology? Mike Rogers, you're not getting one. You understand that? Because you're a bully and you hurt innocent people, and you're doing great harm to your movement, the gay rights movement, by doing what you're doing."
If his behavior is not enough there, the next day he goes on to say he will not apologize (even though he agreed to have me back on after his little outburst).

Where ya been?
I don't like to disclose my travel before I go and return.... Some of the more exciting trips I've been on include the Netroots Nation conference in Las Vegas. I also went to Florida for a week of work. I always forget that Tallahasseee, the state capital, is so far from my close friend in Miami. It's a biiiiig state.
I could call it the summer swelter tour... DC, Vegas, Miami and Texas are not exactly cool this time of year..... but work calls...
